Macraes Phase Four Project

Macraes Phase Four (MP4) encompasses several proposed activities that will keep OceanaGold’s Macraes gold mine operating until the late 2030s.

Macraes Phase Four is our proposal to keep the Macraes Gold Mine operating into the late 2030s.

MP4 is a brownfields project. It is not a new mine. It builds on what’s already here: extending some existing pit and underground areas, revisiting ground mined over the past 36 years, and processing low-grade ore stockpiled on site. 

Macraes has been part of Otago since 1990. MP4 is about continuing that contribution for another decade. It sustains more than 760 direct jobs, and thousands of indirect jobs, across Otago and Waitaki.

Without MP4, the operation begins winding down from 2027, with final closure by 2030.

We’re seeking approval under the Fast-track Approvals Act 2024. An independent Expert Panel will assess the application.

OceanaGold is a gold producer with over 35 years of operating responsibly in New Zealand. The Company was founded in New Zealand, at Otago’s Macraes Operation and has built an international portfolio as one of the most progressive gold miners in the world.

At Macraes, we currently operate underground and open pit mines, and process ore at our Processing Plant. We are also actively exploring in the region.

In the North Island at Waihi, we are currently mining a successful underground operation. Our Waihi North Project received Fast-track approval in December 2025, making it the first major mining operation to be granted approval via the Fast Track Approvals Act. 

Overseas, we have mines in the Philippines and the United States. We are also actively closing a mine at Reefton in the South Island, having successfully operated that mine on land administered by the Department of Conservation.

OceanaGold has a proven track record of working within a tight regulatory framework including controls relating to vibration, noise, dust, ground surface stability, flora and fauna, and water management.
